Sena’s interest in SDGs 1, 2, 4 and 6 has her working on a number of projects aimed at addressing some of the indicators of these global goals and measuring the impact of some intervention in these areas.
Rural Entrepreneurship Project
Amidst efforts to educate African youth in entrepreneurship to position them to take advantage of opportunities on the continent, there is the need to pay attention to the 55% (United Nations , 2018) of the population living in rural areas. In a study by Agyepong, Dood and Akoto (2016), it was concluded that context influences entrepreneurship education and enterprise; hence, it is essential to design context–relevant entrepreneurship training for rural areas.
This has been the philosophy behind my rural entrepreneurship project. This project is in three parts:
-
Explore entrepreneurial opportunities existingin rural communities and making this data available to projects and interventions that support the establishment or rural enterprises;
-
Developing and validating a Rural Entrepreneurip Training model which can be adopted or adapted for training rural youth for entrepreneurship across the global south; and
-
Training rural youth in entrepreneurship using the Rural Entrepreneursip Training model and its curriculum in Cocoa growing communities in Ghana with the Next Generation Cocoa Youth Programme, MASO Read More
Early Childhood Education Project
Investment in young children in Sub-Saharan Africa is very scanty as only two percent of the education budget is allocated to pre-primary education (Yoshikawa, et al., 2013; World Bank , 2017). Also, the currently existing content for early childhood educational programs adopted in Africa is highly influenced by the vision and philosophy of the Western ways of nurturing a child and this has not proofed to work well in Africa because of differences in cultural context (Ejuu, 2012; Ng’asike, 2014; Pence & Schafer, 2006).
This project seeks to address this challenge in three ways:
-
Researching on the status of early childhood education in rural communities to establish gaps to inform interventions in the early childhood education space;
-
Developing an African centered content for use by early childhood education centers in rural communities; and
-
Assisting rural youth to establish early childhood educational centers as businesses in rural communities in Ghana. Read More
Berekuso Impact Study Project
The Berekuso Impact Study is a household survey administered every three years in Berekuso using area sampling and a repeated cross-sectional design. The purpose of the survey is to generate a time-series dataset for multidisciplinary research on the demographic and socio-economic factors of change as Berekuso transitions from a rural agrarian settlement to an urban suburb of Greater Accra.
A methodology pilot was conducted in 2014 and a more comprehensive household survey administered in 2017. The 2017 survey includes demographic questions, questions about dwelling characteristics and household assets, education, sanitation, childhood health, safety, mobile phone use and digital finance, and perceptions of Ashesi University, among others.
In order to continue with data collection at three-year intervals, the next round of the Berekuso household survey will take place in February 2020.
